Basic
statistics on unduly lenient sentences
Under
section 36 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988, if it appears
to the Attorney General that a sentence imposed in the Crown
Court is unduly lenient and the offence is one to which section
36 applies, the Attorney may, with the leave of the Court,
refer the case to the Court of Appeal for them to review the
sentence. The Court of Appeal may quash any sentence passed
and pass any sentence that they think appropriate.
