Solicitor General: Law Officers at the heart of the legislative process

17 July 2010

The newly appointed Solicitor General, Edward Garnier QC MP, has stressed the fundamental role of the Law Officers in legislative procedure.

Speaking to the summer conference of the Constitutional and Administrative Law Bar Association, Mr Garnier said that the influence of the Law Officers starts long before policy has been turned into a Bill. He said he believed the presence of the Attorney General, Solicitor General and the Lord Advocate for Scotland enables them to ensure that the need for legality and propriety is woven in to the fabric of Bill development right from the very start.
