Requests to examine the sentences of Bolton, Griffin and Marshall

18 October 2010

The Attorney General's Office has received a large number of requests asking the Law Officers (the Attorney General and the Solicitor General) to refer the sentences passed on Jack Bolton, Andrew Griffin and Nathan Marshall at Manchester Crown Court on 11 October 2010 to the Court of Appeal as possibly unduly lenient. The three offenders pleaded guilty to Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm and Common Assault. The details of the case have caused a great deal of public concern.

However, the unduly lenient sentence scheme only applies to certain offences, and these particular offences do not fall within the scheme, so cannot be referred to the Court of Appeal for review.
