Brian Altman QC appointed First Senior Treasury Counsel (Criminal)

The Attorney General, Dominic Grieve QC, has appointed Brian Altman QC as First Senior Treasury Counsel (Criminal) to the Crown at the Central Criminal Court. Treasury Counsel prosecutes, usually at the Central Criminal Court, some of the most serious cases in the country.
The Attorney General said: "I am sure that Brian Altman will continue the excellent track record the Treasury Counsel team has in advising and representing the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Crown Prosecution Service in some of their most serious and difficult cases."
Already part of the Treasury Counsel team, Mr Altman replaces Jonathan Laidlaw QC.
The team is headed by First Senior Treasury Counsel, together with a team of Senior Treasury Counsel and Junior Treasury Counsel.

Notes to editors:
- The position of First Senior Treasury Counsel is initially a two year appointment. Mr Altman's appointment starts on 1 December.
- Mr Altman was educated at Chingford Senior High School, then at King's College London where he read law, and then at the University of Amsterdam for a post-graduate degree in European Law. He was called to the Bar in 1981 and is in the chambers of William Clegg QC at 2 Bedford Row, London, WC1.
- He was appointed junior Treasury Counsel at the Old Bailey in 1997 and promoted to senior Treasury Counsel in 2002. In 2008 he was appointed Queen's Counsel. As Treasury Counsel Mr Altman has prosecuted and advises in many serious cases including: murder; manslaughter; police misconduct, war crimes and terrorism.
